A Non Toxic Alternative for Waterproofing Wood

There are times when the thought of using a hazardous wood preservative on wood that will be exposed to consistent moisture just doesn’t make sense for you. Suppose you are building a wooden vegetable garden box, a deck, dock, or wood bridge that is next to or over a pond, lake, or river. Contaminating the soil or water with preservatives is something you’d rather avoid, unless your project dictates the use of pressure treated wood due to building codes.

Internal Wood Stabilizer penetrates bare, untreated wood to harden and densify the wood to prevent water penetration below the surface of the wood.

Recommended for softwood species such as cedar, pine, fir, spruce, and redwood used in direct contact with consistent moisture such as fence posts, gardening boxes, shake roofs, decks, wood docks, wood siding and logs. Product does not have UV protection and will not fill or seal cracks or checks in wood.

Internal Wood Stabilizer is a ONE-TIME PERMANENT APPLICATION that chemically hardens and densifies softwood species used as fence posts, shake roofs, decks, wood siding and logs. . .

Material: Non-toxic liquid penetrates bare, untreated wood with catalyst that reacts with alkali in the wood to densify wood with glass crystals; forms an internal barrier against water, fungus and other causes of deterioration; shall increase bonding of finish coats by 300 percent. Does not contain UV protection. . . .

Discoloration: Product may flush contaminants such as natural tannin out of the wood which will darken or discolor the wood. Discoloration may be removed with Timber Pro UV Clean & Brite.

Coverage: 150 to 200 square feet (14 to 18.6 square meters) per gallon. 1-2 coats recommended.

Finish: Clear; leaves no apparent film or permanent visual change to the wood.

Internal Wood Stabilizer is a great alternative as a non toxic wood waterproofer.

This clear liquid with the consistency of water can be applied to bare wood. It then has a chemical reaction with the free alkali that exists naturally in wood.

When the IWS and alkali meet, a waterproof gel forms within the pores of the wood. Over time that gel hardens to silicate glass crystals which harden and densify the wood so much it drinks much less water. The glass crystals remain imbedded deep within the wood permanently.

The IWS does not contain any UV inhibitors so the wood will eventually turn silver in color if exposed to sunlight. It can also push excess tannin out of the wood as the crystals form, tuning it very dark or even blackish if it is redwood.

This darkness can be washed off with a brightener such as Clean & Brite. IWS can be stained over with select transparent stains once the IWS has been on the wood over 30 days if you wish to retain wood color and prevent graying.
